Burgenland ( land of the castles) is one of the nine Austrian provinces and is divided into two geographicly different areas with the East being flatland with the plains of the Puszta, starting here and extending into Hungary. The Southern area of the province is predominantly tree covered hills and boasts many ancient castles. Some towns like "Güssing" are famous for it's thatched cottages with big stork nests on the chimneys.

In an area on the Austrian/Hungarian boarder lies the "Neusiedler See", a big lake, where windsurfing is enjoyed by both local and international sports persons. This lake takes it's name from the small town near to where it is located. The general area is designated as a National Park where common and rare birds are watched studied by local and international bird watchers.

Burgenland is famous for excellent wines like "Blaufränkisch", "Zweigelt", "grüner Veltliner". There is a very special wine in South Burgenland, which is called "Uhudler"and it is peculiar as it is made of a very old wine stock, with it's unique taste having a distinct berry flavour.
