Stift Melk in Lower Austria

Stift Melk is a Benedictine Abbey located in the town of Melk in the Austrian Wachau above  the Danube river. It is among the world's most famous monestic sites. Saint Coloman of Stockerau, who was orginially Irish was burried in the abbey. It was founded in 1089, but only 2 of the old towers remained of the old building, the today's baroque abbey was built between 1702 and 1736.

Das Stift Melk ist ein Benediktiner Kloster, welches sich in der Stadt Melk in der österreichischen Wachau über der Donau befindet. Es ist eines der berühmtesten Stifte in der Welt. Der Heilige Coloman von Stockerau, welcher irischer Abstammung war, wurde in diesem Stift begraben. Es wurde 1089 errichtet, aber nur 2 von den alten Türmen des alten Gebäudes sind erhalten. Das barocke Stift von heute wurde zwischen 1702 und 1736 errichtet.

Every time I visit a rich decorated church or abbey, I remember my dad, who called those kind of buildings decadent. He did not like the thought of so many people living in poverty, while the catholic church lived in luxury. Though I love this beautiful building, I am not comfortable with this thought neither and I am sure that this is not really what God wanted.

Jedes Mal, wenn ich eine reichdekorierte Kirche oder ein Kloster dieser Art besuche, erinnere ich mich an meinen Vater, der diese Verschwedung dekadent nannte. Er konnte den Gedanken nicht ertragen, dass so viele Leute in Armut leben mussten, während die katholische Kirche Reichtum ansammelte. Obwohl ich dieses wundervolle Gebäude sehr mag, behagt mit dieser Gedanke auch nicht wirklich und ich bin mir sicher, dass das nicht im Sinne Gottes ist.

Area Alpl and Hochwechsel in Styria

From the Alpl in Rosegger Waldheimat to the Hochwechsel, which is a 1743m high mountain in Styria.

We went, covered in thick blankets, in a horse coach through the winter landscape.  My brother Günter and his wife Karin obviously enjoyed it and so did we. At one stage, up the hill, the poor horses slipped on an icy patch and we had to get out of the coach. We wondered if we had to push the horses on their bums hill upwards, but we did not.  They were delighted when the heavy load was gone and sprinted up in a high speed, I thought I could see a happy grin on their faces that they got rid of us stupid tourists.

Karin tries to eat a huge Buchtel at the "Buchtelbar" in Wenigzell. A Buchtel is a fluffy pastry, filled with jam. The Buchtelbar is a famous restaurant, it is well known for it's excellent bakery and especially for the enormous size of the same.You can find more info about the Buchtelbar on their website: www.buchtelbar.at

Peter Roseggers Waldheimat in Styria/Austria

We waited so long to see a lovely winter landscape with lots of snow again and here it is. Well, there was not as much snow as we hoped, but it still looked beautiful.

Wir haben so lange darauf gewartet endlich wieder eine zauberhafte Winterlandschaft mit viel Schnee zu sehen und hier ist sie! Nun gut, dort war nicht ganz so viel Schnee, wie wir uns erhofft hatten, aber es sah trotzdem wunderschön aus.

 

A lonely house on a hill, probably built by people who love their privacy. We did not know what the small house in the left photo was meant to be for, we guessed it might have been used as a storage, but we could be wrong as well.                                                                  Ein einsames Haus auf einem Hügel, wahrscheinlich erbaut von Leuten, die ihre Privatsphäre lieben. Wir wussten nicht, wofür das kleine Gebäude im linken Bild benutzt wurde, wir nahmen an, dass es eine Art Schuppen war.

This place is called "Peter Roseggers Waldheimat". Peter Rosegger was born in this area in Styria in 1843. Though he had only a short education of 1.5 years, he became a tailor at the age of 17 and started to write numerous books. As his talent was discovered he got the opportunity to finish his studies at an Academy for Trades and Industries in Graz. In later years he was nominated for the Nobel Prize.

Dieser Ort wird "Peter Roseggers Waldheimat" genannt. Peter Rosegger wurde in dieser Gegend in der Steiermark in 1843 geboren. Obwohl er nur eine kurze Ausbildung hatte ( 1.5 Jahre), erlernte er das Schneiderhandwerk im Alter von 17 Jahren und begann zahlreiche Bücher zu schreiben. Als sein Talent entdeckt wurde, bekam er die Gelegenheit die Akademie fuer Handel und Industrie zu besuchen.  In späteren Jahren wurde er für den Nobel Preis nominiert.

Peter Rosegger never forgot the hard times on the country and used most of the money he earnt to help people of his village. He built a school, renovated a protestant and a catholic church and supported the poor people of the area as much as he could.                                                                  Peter Rosegger vergaß niemals die harten Zeiten auf dem Land und nutzte den größten Anteil seines Erwerbs, um den Leuten in seinem Ort zu helfen. Er erbaute eine Schule, renovierte eine evangelische und eine katholische Kirche und unterstütze die armen Leute im Dorf, so gut er konnte.

 

He lived in this room in the school until he died in 1918. Er lebte in diesem Raum in der Schule bis zu seinem Tod in 1918.
