Ireland would not be Ireland without Mythology, which belongs nearly as much to the image of Ireland, as the harp does. In all tourist shops you can get key rings, mugs and t-shirts with the image of a Leprechaun imprinted upon them.
Leprechauns or” little people” are little gnome like figures and are usually shown with red hair, red beard, green clothes and a huge hat. If you catch a Leprechaun, you should hold him and not take your eyes off him, until he tells you where his gold is hidden, or so says the story.
The Banshee appears as a woman, young or old, beautiful or ugly. She shows up a short time before someone is about to die to inform the family of the tragic event that is imminent. It’s never a good sign when the Banshee appears!
There are also Fairies and Pixies. Pixies can be nice fairies or nasty little creatures. But those are only a few of the figures in Irish Mythology, and there are many many more.
There are sites on the internet to view webcams in some Irish areas, where you can keep watching for fairies and leprechauns, by day and night. It is said, that some of the “little people” were already seen.
I learnt that the Irish are very realistic people. The only ones, who believe in the Irish fairytales, are usually tourists, mainly Americans, and the Irish have great fun with them.
But I remember now that I met one Irish person who did believe in Pixies, an elderly Dubliner named Joe. My partner Denis and I met him once in a bar. Joe was amazing; he claimed that he could drink 20-25 pints in one evening. I was very surprised to see that one single person was able to drink so much alcohol in one sitting! Towards the end of his drinking session and he could no longer hold much more liquid, he asked the barmaid for “Whixie”. As he was very drunk at that stage, his tongue was heavy and he was not able to pronounce Whiskey anymore.
That evening Joe told us his very personal secret. He told us he sees Pixies very often, they are creeping out from every corner, when the night comes, and they do everything to annoy him. While he was telling us his story, he suddenly hit his flat hand on the table. Then he picked up something invisible with two fingers, put it in front of his eyes and stared cross-eyed on a piece of nothing. “A Pixieee again! Little Bastard!” he shouted. We heard later that Joe was brought to hospital once, because he always sees Pixies after excessive alcohol sessions. Poor old Joe!
Now I will finish my little trip to the Irish Fantasyland and now it is on you if you want to find out, if there is really a pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow.
