Cobh in County Cork

The former fishing village Cobh (Cove) is located on "The Great Island", which is a part of the second largest Harbour in the world, the Cork Harbour.
In the 18th Century Cork Harbour became an important port for naval and commercial fleets, offering safe anchorage, refuelling and recreational facilities.
Cobh was visited by Queen Victoria in 1849 and renamed to Queenstown, by this time the village has grown to a busy, cosmopolitan port.

Das frühere Fischerdorf Cobh (Cove) befindet sich auf "The Great Island" und ist ein Teil des zweitgrössten Hafens in der Welt, des Cork Hafens.
Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde Cork Harbour ein wichtiger Hafen für die Schifffahrt und für den Handel von kommerziellen Waren , welcher einen sicheren Anlegeplatz, Treibstoff und Erholungseinrichtungen anbot.
Queen Victoria besuchte Cobh im Jahr 1849, weshalb die Stadt in Queenstown umbenannt wurde, zu dieser Zeit war das ehemalige Dorf zu einem hoch frequentierten internationalen Hafen herangewachsen.

The dog in the picutre is real. He appeared so relaxed and fitted into the scene as if he was a part of it.

It is really worth to visit Cobh.

Cobh ist einen Besuch wert.

That is only a small church, there is a much bigger and nicer one on the hill, which dominates the scene of Cobh, but I did not take a photograph as it appears already in one of my earlier posts.

Das ist nur eine kleine Kirche, es steht eine weitaus groessere auf dem Hügel, welche die Szene von Cobh dominiert, von der habe ich aber dieses Mal kein Foto gemacht, da sie schon in einem meiner früheren Beiträge erscheint.

Cobh was the last harbour visited by the Titanic before it headed towards America. It is now nearly 100 years since the big catastrophe when the Titanic sank on the 15th April 1912.

Cobh war der letzte Hafen, an dem die Titanic anlegte, bevor sie Richtung Amerika unterwegs war. Es ist nun beinahe 100 Jahre her, seit der grossen Katastrophe, als die Titanic am 15. April 1912 sank.

During the British occupation lots of Irish convicts were deported to Australia and about 2 million people emigrated on the so called "coffin ships" to the "New World" America to escape the famine.

Während der britischen Besatzung wurden irische Sträflinge nach Australien deportiert und ca. 2 Millionen Menschen emigrierten auf den sogenannten Sargschiffen in die "Neue Welt" Amerika, um der Hungersnot zu enkommen.

Denis wanted to buy this site with the old house and the tower once. Pity that he did not, I find it lovely and would have liked to live there! The sea view must be amazing!

It was a lovely day today, warm and only a gentle breeze

We went to Hook Head, but this time I did not take photos of the light house, as I was more interested in the sea and the sun light.

We hoped to see some whales, because there were some seen in this area recently, but tough luck again!

That is Duncannon strand, we enjoyed our walk on the beach.

But soon the peaceful scene was disturbed by a guy on his motor bike, who was desperately seeking for attention.

The farmer is probably fed up of keeping ordinary sheep. Maybe we see more lamas in Ireland in future.

A bit of Kilkenny and Carlow

We always like to go for a walk in Graiguenamanagh in County Kilkenny. It is a quiet town on the river Barrow and it has a nice walking path along the river and up to the forest. We saw today that there are some house boats for sale, I would immediately buy one, if I had so much money to spend.

Nobody knows how this old mill stone got there. It is assumed it was produced at the same place where it is and probably forgotten.

While there is lots of snow everywhere in Europe, we have temperatures up to 9 degrees and nature starts to blossom again.

No snow - no winter

Last year was a strange year, we had no summer and no winter either. 2012 started with autumnlike weather or maybe even like spring, even some plants got mixed up and started to push their heads through the grounds too early. They probably freeze to death, when the weather changes.

Lots of people are ill and have to stay in bed, so did I, a bad flu knockned me out since Christmas and I am only slowly recovering. I am looking forward to spring to get out into the nature more often again.
