Killarney Co. Kerry and Adare Co. Limerick

Let's start with Killarney. I always thought Killarney was nice, but this time I did not like it so much as there is not much to see, apart from two streets in the city centre, which are ok. But maybe my mood was not right as we had such a nice accommodation in Tralee and in Killarney we were not so lucky. I also thought the city was dead, I walked around at 11 o'clock and nobody seemed to be awake. The streets were almost empty and the few people I saw were miserable.

On the way home we drove through Adare in County Limerick, a very nice village with old cottages, which are very well preserved .

Tralee, Co. Kerry

We were in Kerry last week. The weather was not great, but as it was dry for most of the time,
I was happy enough. Though you can see the first signs of spring in the landscape, the temperatures are still not spring-like. It is still a bit too cold for this time of the year!

What can you do when it is cold and uncomfortable outside? You go into a nice bar and enjoy your Guiness or Cider or whatever you like to drink to keep you warm.

Rose of Tralee Park

The Rose of Tralee is an international event and one of Ireland's longest running festivals,
celebrating 57 years in 2016. Every year young Irish women and woman of Irish decent from around the world take part inthe competition, but only one of them is crowned to be the "Rose of Tralee".

Winter 2015 in Ireland

This winter feels more like spring, the roses in my garden started to bloom again and also some of the pansies and geraniums. No surprise as they got lots of water and it was not too cold and actually is one of the warmest winters on record, the meteorologists say. I did not see a single snow flake this year, which makes me a bit sad, because like most people, I would have liked a "White Christmas"! But the lack of snow is not the worst problem this country faces, as it rained cats and dogs for a number of weeks, Ireland is flooded in many areas, people are devastated as their homes are damaged and businesses ruined. Unfortunately this is how the year 2015 has ended for many Irish! ( see pictures below)

Saturday, 31 October 2015

As most of us know, Halloween started in Ireland many moons ago!
The Celts' lives revolved around growing their food, so the end of the
harvest season was celebrated as the end of the year.

SAMHAIN ( named after Lord of the Dead) was a big event and took
place every year on the 31st October.

The Celts associated winter with human death and believed that on the
night that marked the end of summer, winter started
and ghosts of the dead would return to Earth.
They were not afraid of ghosts, in opposite, the Druids needed them
to help to predict the future.
To celebrate that event, they made big bonfires, dressed up in costumes
consisting of animal heads and skins and tried to tell each other's future.

BE AWARE OF THE GHOSTS WHO WANT TO HAUNT YOU TONIGHT!!!

______________________

Zukunft vorherzusagen.

HÜTE DICH VOR DEN GEISTERN, DIE DICH HEUTE NACHT HEIMSUCHEN WOLLEN!!!

Achill Island, Co. Mayo and Clonmacnoise, Co. Westmeath

Last weekend we went to Achill Island in County Mayo. The parish of Achill includes also the Curraun Peninsula. Achill is connected to the mainland by a bridge only.
In July it appears in all different shades of greens, which of course is very nice, but I think the island is even more beautiful in May, when the Rhododendron and Furze Bushes bloom and make the scenery more colorful.
The photo above was taken on Friday, when it was overcast, but the weather was still not too bad.

As you see here on the next few photos, the weather got very bad, dark clouds, rain and fog followed for the next 2 days.

In Keel, where we stayed in a nice B&B is a little lake, where surfers enjoy their sports.
In Keel, wo wir in einem netten Bed and Breakfast übernachteten, gibt es einen kleinen See, der vom nahegelegenen Meer gespeist wird, wo Surfer ihren Sport ausüben.

Our last day was Monday and we went home slowly through the Midlands. It was still raining in some areas, but we also saw a good bit of sunshine.
